TECH NEWS

Description from our LOCAL PARTNER

With 1.5 million people living in Munich and more than 50,000 students (out of which 15% are international), Munich boasts a great hub for talent. The city’s universities do not only produce world-class engineers but also have renowned entrepreneurship centers, namely: LMU Entrepreneurship Center, UnternehmerTUM, Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Technology and Innovation Management (CeTIM).

The third largest city in Germany in recent years attracted lots of attention because of the offered opportunities and networks, which are celebrated at its annual founders’ flagship event Bits&Pretzels bringing stars from the Silicon Valley and even Hollywood to town.

Some of the well-known startup success stories from Munich include: FRANKA EMIKA (robotics), WestWing (home&living), Lilium Aviation (e-aviation), eGym (fitness), Navvis (3D visualization), MorphoSys (biotech), Flixbus (travel), Wirecard (payment) and Metaio (AR).

With an immense corporate portfolio, Munich is the city to be for any startup in the field of digital industry, smart manufacturing, AI or automotive seeking to mingle with the global players like BMW, Siemens, IOT Watson or Microsoft.

The local ecosystem builds on the interaction of startups and corporates. Hubs for digital transformation, strong technology clusters and accelerators bring both sides together. For instance, the TechFounders accelerator enables startups and companies to realize joint pilot projects.

Access to finance is a big plus: Due to its 53 VC firms and 350 investment managers, Munich is by far the most important venture capital location in Germany. Munich’s investors are known throughout Germany for their deep pockets, including: Holtzbrinck Ventures, Wellington Partners, Target Partners as well as the state backed Bayern Kapital and one of the largest Business Angel Networks in Germany maintained by BayStartup.

For international startups and companies aiming to settle in Munich, players such as Invest in Bavaria offer an ideal starting point.Follow the ecosystem dynamics on Munich-Startup.de and contact the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK München) for more details on the various institutions.
